Volunteers handbook

Together!

With joy and great appreciation, I greet all of you who have shown an interest in the organizing of the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2017 and decided to personally contribute to the success of the event by working as volunteers. I warmly welcome you all to be part of our over 400-strong organization. Each one of us has our own role and tasks, shifts, team leaders and every one of us bears a great responsibility for the overall success of the event. I would like to emphasize that every single role is important and has its part in contributing to the bigger picture.

At the orientation meeting for the volunteers held at the beginning of February, I raised a few themes in particular to rouse that sense of working and doing together during the Championships.

I hope we all keep these simple mottos in mind:

  • Smiling faces and kind words are always more than welcome.

A positive attitude and a happy smiling face will make a difference in every situation.

  • I am genuinely present, pay attention and listen.

It is to be expected that the days filled with different kinds of duties will be intense. So, I kindly want to remind you to eat, sleep and rest between shifts in order to have the energy and to be at your best when your next shift starts.

  • Let’s come across as happy people and let’s also be proud of what we know and what we are doing.

Our happiness infects those around us! So, let’s make it spread.

  • If I don’t know something or if I am not sure about something, I will find out for the person asking.

In different tasks, there will be situations, no doubt, in which a competitor, spectator, judge, official or another volunteer asks us a question and at that moment we are not able to provide them with an answer. None of us can remember everything by heart, but we can, nevertheless, always help and try to find out an answer to the question. So, let’s not leave the person with the question all alone, but let’s do our best instead to find the people who can help us answer the question.

The theme of Finland’s centenary celebration is Together. Now this is what our event is very much about, working together. Let’s organize a spectacular event, together!

I thank you all!

- Laura Raitio, President of Finnish Figure Skating Association
